Managing Applications

Managing applications and databases within SilverScreen is patterned after the drag-and-drop functionality of your desktop computer. There are a number of possible destinations for dropping an item. These include any of the tools on the Tools sheet, the tabs on the Tabs sheet, either Hot Spot and the QuickSilver icon.

Getting Info

Use the corner button or the Sheet menu to activate the Tools sheet. Drag an application (or database) to the Info tool (the first of the four large icons shown on the Tools sheet) to bring up the item's Information dialog.

Size is displayed as the application size + associated database size. Date refers to the application creation date and not data. Tap the application's icon to access the Replace Icon dialog. The Backup Bit checkbox interacts with your PC HotSync settings to determine if an item will produce a backup copy on your desktop.

Re-naming Applications: Tap the application's name in the Information dialog to select it and then use the graffiti area to edit the name.

Hiding Items: Tap the Hidden check box to select it. When an application or database is Hidden it will not be displayed within SilverScreen unless the Display Hidden Items check box (in the Silver Prefs > General dialog) is activated.

Categorizing

There are four different methods for categorizing applications within SilverScreen. The first method is to use the Category pick list in the application's Information dialog (shown above). The second method is via the Category dialog which is accessed by tapping the Category tool on the Tools sheet. The third way to categorize an application is to drag and drop it on the Category tool. The application's current category will be highlighted on the pick list that comes up. Tap a different category to re-catogorize the application or tap outside of the pick list to cancel the operation.

Expansion Media: When applications in RAM are dragged to the Category tool the pick list will display options to Copy or Move the item to expansion media (if it is available on the device). Once the application is transferred to the expansion media it is displayed with a little card icon in the corner of its large icon.

Tabs Sheet: The last method of categorizing apps is to drag and drop them on the desired category tab on the Tabs sheet. If you have more than six categories defined it may be necessary to hold the application over the Nav tab to advance to the desired tab.

Beaming

There are two methods for initiating application beaming within SilverScreen. The first is to tap the Beam tool to access the Beam dialog. The second method is to drag and drop an application onto the Beam tool. This will automatically initiate beaming.

Beaming Databases: Change to the List view. Tap the list-expander button to display databases. Drag the database you want to beam onto the Beam tool.

Deleting

Items to be deleted need to be dragged to the Trash tool on the Tools sheet. The items will remain in memory until the Trash tool is directly selected to call up the Trash Bin dialog and the Empty Bin button is selected.

Deleting Databases: Change to the List view. Tap the list-expander button to display databases. Drag the database you want to remove from the device onto the Trash tool.

Launching

There are three ways to launch applications. The first method is simply to tap the application's icon in either the Icon view or List view.

Hot Spots: Drag and drop an application onto a Hot Spot to assign its launch to that button.

QuickSilver: In the top-right corner of the screen you will find QuickSilver icon. Tap the icon to display a pick list of up to ten of the most recently used applications. Tap on any application in the list to launch it.

Drag and drop an application on the QuickSilver icon to add it separately to the QuickSilver list as one of My Picks. Repeating this operation will remove the item from My Picks.
